Oct. 12, 2015 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The teams of Alec Adamson and Tommy Lam in Flight "B", along with James Wade and Jesse Ross in Flight "C", each brought home doubles titles on Sunday, closing out the UC Davis men's tennis team's stay at the fourth-annual UCSB Classic this weekend in Santa Barbara, California.
Due to numerous match-ups that pitted teammates against one another heading into the final day, the brackets were altered to avoid conflicts. However, all three flights of doubles played out with the Aggies emerging victorious in two of them.
The first title came thanks to the duo of Adamson and Lam, who finished off a perfect 3-0 run through the winners bracket of Flight "B" by defeating Oregon's Bartosz Sawicki and Cormac Clissold, 8-6, in the final. It's a solid showing for the pair, which teamed up just twice last fall for the Aggies, finishing 1-1.
Wade and Ross made it two titles for UC Davis in Flight "C" thanks to an 8-7 win over Loyola Marymount's Jamie Thorp and Alex Bourgios in the final -- a last-round replacement for the Fresno State duo of Nikolas Papic and Alexandros Vakouftsis.
A third Aggie duo, Brett Bacharach and Adam Levie, were also in the consolation final of Flight "B", but fell at the hands of the Oregon tandem of Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens, 8-6.
With a modified singles schedule on Sunday, five Aggies in action posted wins to close out the tournament, including straight-set victories by Wade (6-3, 6-1) and sophomore Everett Maltby (7-6, 7-5) over teammates Adamson and Bryce McKelvie, respectively.
Bacharach gutted out a three-set win over UC Santa Barbara's Teague Hamilton, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, junior Eli Whittle defeated the Gauchos' Riley Scott, 6-3, 7-5, and Lam eased past Pacific's Lance Ngo, 6-1, 6-2.
UC Davis now has 11 days off before heading to Seattle to compete at the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by the University of Washington. The Aggies open the tournament on Thursday (Oct. 22), with the championship matches scheduled for the following Monday (Oct. 26).
Last season, Wade advanced to the Round of 16 in main draw singles play, while the duo of Adamson and Levie advanced to the main draw doubles semifinals for the second consecutive season, eventually falling in a third-set tiebreaker to San Francisco's Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa.
