RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Crystal Crump chopped UC Davis' two-goal deficit in half in the 54th minute when she beat UC Riverside goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas far post in Sunday's Big West Conference match at UC Riverside Soccer Stadium. With the Aggies forced to take calculated risks on offense as the second half continued, still trailing by one, the Highlanders pushed their cushion back to its original margin with just over five minutes remaining in the match to record a 3-1 victory.
UC Davis will return home for its upcoming match, scheduled for next Sunday, with an 8-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 Big West record. UC Riverside is now 8-6 and 2-1.
After the Highlanders scored in the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime, and 4:31 seconds after play resumed in the second half, Crump pulled UC Davis within striking distance when Haley Hughes' pass from the left corner found her teammate just a handful of feet away from goal alongside the end line. Once she received the ball, Crump finished the scoring opportunity by knocking a shot past Silas to score her third goal of the season and trim the Aggies' deficit to one with plenty of time remaining in the match.
Even though UC Davis was able to generate numerous scoring chances after scoring its goal, the team was forced to take strategic chances on offense in an attempt to score the equalizer and force overtime.
This was how UC Riverside's Tyler Cunningham was able to score her second goal of the afternoon in the 85th minute, to bump the Highlanders' cushion back to two.
Of UC Davis' eight attempts, Crump and Hughes each recorded a shot on goal.
On the opposite side of the field, Alexis Smith faced 20 shots and recorded six saves.
Sunday's result marks the first time since 2009 that UC Davis dropped a head-to-head contest to the Highlanders.
UC Davis will return to Aggie Soccer Field for its penultimate home game of the season when UC Santa Barbara visits campus on Oct. 18 -- another league contests that also doubles as women's soccer's Cancer Awareness Match. Fans are encouraged to join the Aggies by wearing pink that day.
