DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis Lucas Mohageg one-timed a shot through traffic at the left post with just under three minutes remaining in overtime on Saturday afternoon, helping lift the Aggies to a 2-1 victory over visiting UC Irvine at Aggie Soccer Field.

The victory evened UC Davis' mark at 6-6-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Big West Conference play as the Aggies completed their run against the league's South Division. The Anteaters fell to 2-8-3 overall and remained winless in conference play at 0-3-1.

"Soccer's a funny game," Head Coach Dwayne Shaffer said. "We were all over the field in the second half, probably should have had three or four goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. We're a much better team than our record indicates overall, we're on a roll, we're getting results in the Big West, and we're in the thick of it."

UC Davis had the only two shots in the extra period, but it was the second one that sent a celebratory Homecoming crowd home happy. A foul near midfield awarded the Aggies a free kick and Ryan Gross found sophomore Evan Barrett on the right side to start the play. Barrett, who had the game-tying goal against CSUN two days earlier, sent a ball into the box that was punched back by freshman Justin Wright to Mohageg, who hit it off the side of his foot and inside the left post to end the match.

"The ball kind of got messed around in the box and it came right to me," Mohageg said. "I didn't even look down at it, I just tapped it in off the side of my foot to the post. Definitely right place at the right time."

It was the sixth goal of the year for the senior from Los Altos, the most by an Aggie since Matt Sheldon and Matt Wiesenfarth each scored six times in 2013. It was the second assist of the year for both Barrett and Wright, while Mohageg's 15 points this season (six goals, three assists) are the most for a UC Davis player since Quincy Amarikwa finished the 2008 season with 31 (15 goals, assist).

Wiesenfarth was the one that gave the Aggies the early lead, parlaying a through ball by Matt Baringer that split a pair of defenders and buried it across to the right side for the 1-0 lead just 16 minutes in.

UC Davis carried that lead into the locker room and through most of the second half, with junior goalkeeper Armando Quezada preserving the shutout when he denied the Anteaters' Mats Bjurman on a penalty kick attempt in the 55th minute after he was taken down in the box driving toward the goal.

The stop was one of a career-high seven saves for Quezada, who made five of those stops in the opening period to stymie the UCI offense. The junior's previous career his was six set against Cal Poly in 2014 and tied earlier this year in a win over Wisconsin.

"We have two really good goalkeepers, and I thought Armando was really good today," Shaffer said. "My gut was telling me to go with Armando today and he came up big. He's vocal, he's energetic, and he commands his defense. That's why I went with him today and it paid off for us."

UC Irvine eventually got the goal back with just over six minutes remaining in regulation as Ivan Canalas collected his fourth goal of the season to the lower left corner off a nice pass from Jaime Phillips to tie the match at 1-1 and force overtime.

The Aggies finished with an 18-13 advantage in shots, but placed only six of those on frame compared to eight for the Anteaters. Wiesenfarth led the barrage with four shots, tying UC Irvine's Eduardo Calzada for match honors.

UC Davis closes out its four-match homestand next week, opening Big West North Division play against Cal Poly on Wednesday (Oct. 14) and Sacramento State on Saturday (Oct. 17) at Aggie Soccer Field. Both matches are scheduled to kick-off at 3 p.m.
