RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Freshman Roy Boateng scored just before the end of the first half for the early lead and sophomore Kyle Higgins added his first of the year early in the second, helping lift visiting UC Davis to a 2-0 win over UC Riverside in the Big West Conference opener for both teams on Thursday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
The win was the fourth straight for the Aggies, who evened their mark at 5-5 overall and moved to 1-0 in league play. UC Davis won its Big West opener for the third straight season and extended its longest winning streak since winning four straight from Sept. 30-Oct. 13, 2012.
Riverside fell to 4-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big West with the defeat.
Boateng's game-winner came with just over seven minutes to play in the opening period, parlaying passes from Greg Salazar and Lucas Mohageg into his second goal of the year. Mohageg found the head of Boateng in the middle of the box and the freshman buried it to the near post for the 1-0 advantage.
Although his run of a goal in four straight matches came to an end, Mohageg notched his fifth straight game with at least one point thanks to his third assist of the season, while Salazar collected his first point of the year and his second career assist. Mohageg's 13 points this season are the most for an Aggie since Matt Wiesenfarth and Matt Sheldon shared the team lead with 13 points in 2013.
The score remained that way through the half until Higgins gave the Aggies some breathing room in the 50th minute, finishing a pass from Justin Wright to the right corner of the net for the 2-0 advantage. Higgins became the 11th different UC Davis player to find the back of the net this season while Wright collected his first career assist.
The Aggies finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots -- eight of those on frame -- while senior goalkeeper Kris Schultz stopped five shots in wrapping up his second shutout of the year. Mohageg, Matt Wiesenfarth, and Lizandro Torres, led UC Davis with a match-high three shots.
Big West opening weekend continues on Saturday (Oct. 3) at 7 p.m., as the Aggies head to Orange County to take on defending Big West Tournament champion Cal State Fullerton.
