Seniors swim in home finale against Tigers

Jan. 30, 2015

THIS WEEK...
Pacific (6-2) at UC Davis (4-2)
Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015
Noon
Davis, Calif.
Schaal Aquatics Center

TAKE YOUR MARK: The UC Davis women's swimming and diving team brings its 2014-15 regular season to a close this weekend, swimming off their seniors against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival Pacific, while the divers compete against Cal Poly, in the final home dual of the year on Saturday (Jan. 31) at Noon at the Schaal Aquatics Center.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Pacific enters the weekend with a 6-2 record in duals this season, coming off a weekend that saw the Tigers defeat UC Santa Barbara (149-108) and Loyola Marymount (170-79) on Jan. 23, before falling in a dual at San Diego State (129-113) a day later... Sophomore Margaux Verger Gourson won five events on the weekend, including a pair of wins in the 1000 freestyle, while junior Haley Preston won both backstroke distances and the 100 fly against the Gauchos.

SERIES NOTES: UC Davis has won its last five duals with Pacific, including a 182-80 victory last season in Stockton, California. The Tigers' last dual win came during the 2008-09 season when Pacific squeaked out a, 132-130, win at home.

A LOOK AT CAL POLY: While the Mustang swimmers remain home for their Blue-Green rivalry matchup against Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara, the divers head north to take on the Aggies on Saturday. Freshman Lauren Pierce leads Cal Poly on the 1-meter board, scoring a season-best 441.10 on Jan. 18 at the Bruin Diving Invitational.

SO WE MEET AGAIN: Saturday marks the second look at the Tigers this season for the Aggies after the two teams went head-to-head in a non-scoring dual back on Oct. 18 in Stockton. Sophomore Hilvy Cheung won two individual events (200 fly and 200 IM) and contributed to a pair of relay victories (200 fly and 200 back). Sophomore Elise Roberts also grabbed a win in the 200 breaststroke and helped UC Davis to a win in the 200 breaststroke relay.

THE WEEK THAT WAS: Senior Samantha Shellem won three individual events and was one of three multi-event winners on the day for the Aggies, who led wire-to-wire in a win over rival UC Santa Barbara, 148-114, on Jan. 24. UC Davis won 10 of the 16 events on the day, thanks to eight individual victories and a pair of relay wins, as senior Hilary Hunt doubled in the 100 and 200 backstroke while Hilvy Cheung added wins in the 100 and 200 fly. Junior Marissa Brown added a win in the 1000 free, leading an Aggies' charge that saw them take four of the top five spots in the event.

STREAKING AGGIES: With their win over the Gauchos last weekend, the Aggies notched their 11th consecutive regular season dual meet win over MPSF rivals dating back to a narrow, 159-141, defeat to UC Santa Barbara back on Jan. 28, 2012.

UNBEATEN: Sophomore Hilvy Cheung is unbeaten in the 200 fly this season, claiming individual honors in five of the six duals for the Aggies in 2014-15 (she was not entered in the event against LMU on Nov. 1), and posting a season-best time of 1:57.50 at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational on Dec. 6 -- earning her second of two NCAA "B" marks in Austin. She has also posted the fastest time in the 100 fly in five duals this season (she had the lowest time in the event against BYU and LMU, but her times were exhibitioned after the Aggies clinched the meet) and finished second against Nevada on Nov. 8. Senior Hilary Hunt has also been near perfect this season in the 100 back, winning the event in each of the last five duals after finishing third in the opener against San Jose State.

LOOKING AHEAD: Following Saturday's contest against Pacific, UC Davis will have two weeks to prepare for the fifth-annual MPSF Swimming and Diving Championships in Southern California. The Aggies are out to defend their back-to-back titles beginning on Feb. 18, with swimming events getting underway at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, California, while the divers open competition at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. The championships run through Feb. 21.
