The win, UC Davis' second during its current five-match road trip and fifth straight against the Vikings, pushes the team's overall record to 2-1. Portland State, which opened its spring season against the Aggies Saturday afternoon, is now 0-1.
Kristy Jorgensen and Layla Sanders started the Aggies' day in a positive way by winning their No. 1 doubles match, 6-2. At the No. 2 position, Lani-Rae Green and Tiffany Pham stepped up and pulled away to record a 7-5 victory, and officially collect the dual's first team point.
Kamila Kecki and Frederique Sleiffer completed the Aggies' doubles sweep by winning their tiebreaker by a 7-2 margin, to win their match, 7-6.
After singles play commenced, Sanders was the first to finish her match, in come-from-behind fashion to double UC Davis' lead.
Competing at No. 4, Sleiffer won the first set against Kelsey Frey, 7-5, before falling 3-6 in the following frame. Sleiffer bounced back in the third by posting a 6-3 score to help the Aggies win the first two available team points.
Little did players from either team know, when Sleiffer walked off the courts, that her intense three-set showdown set the stage for the events that unfolded throughout the rest of the afternoon.
On the wrong end of a 6-0, first-set shutout, Sanders stormed back to win the next two sets, 7-5 and 6-4 at the No. 1 position against Siena Peri, to become the second of four Aggies to win both matches played throughout the day.
Also collecting individual sweeps on the day were Green, Sleiffer and Kecki.
Sanders, the second Aggie to finish her singles match, was the second of five players that needed three sets to determine a winner. Of those five that went the distance, UC Davis dug deep to win four individual contests.
In another three-set battle that needed tiebreakers on two occasions, Green did just that by easily winning her third set. By doing so, UC Davis reached the four-point threshold and won the first of its two weekend matches against Portland-based schools.
Green lost her first set tiebreaker versus Elena-Sabina Preda by a 3-7 score, but rebounded in the second frame, and tied her singles match at one apiece by winning another tiebreak by a 7-2 result. In the decisive set, Green simply outworked and outlasted Preda to take the third set, 6-1, to earn her first college sweep.
Jessie Lee suffered a similar challenge in her singles match when another three sets were needed to declare a winner. After losing the first set, 4-6, she simply dominated the rest of her match against Megan Govi. After winning her second-set tiebreaker, 7-4, Lee only dropped one game the rest of the way and extended her team's lead to a four-point cushion.
Unlike all of her teammates, only two sets were needed for Kecki to collect the Aggies' final point of the day in singles action. Competing at the No. 6 slot, she defeated Alexa McDonald, 6-2, 6-2, to cap a gritty, and dominating performance by UC Davis.
In exhibition action, Jorgensen breezed past Ayaka Terakawa, 6-1, 6-0, while teammate Samantha Martino wasted little time in dispatching Alana Chaplin, 6-0, 6-1.
The Aggies will end their weekend in Oregon by facing the Portland Pilots in a 10 a.m., Sunday morning match.
