LOS ANGELES -- It came down to a marathon third set in the final match of the day, but UC Davis sophomore Bryce McKelvie rallied from a set down to defeat Loyola Marymount's Cristobal Rivera at No. 3 singles and help lift the visiting Aggies to a narrow, 4-3, victory over the Lions on Friday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center.

UC Davis improves to 2-2 overall on the year, snapping a seven-match road losing streak dating back to February of last year. LMU, which dropped its season opener to nationally ranked Oregon, fell to 0-2 overall.

"That was a clutch win for Bryce and a great team victory," Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer said.

Rivera took the early lead in the match, cruising to a 6-1 victory in the opening set before McKelvie responded, bouncing back for a 6-3 victory to force a third, and deciding, set. The San Jose, California, native rode the momentum from his second-set victory to a 3-1 lead in the third before Rivera answered with a rally of his own.

The junior from LMU came back to win the next three games and take a 4-3 advantage, eventually pushing the Aggies to the brink at 5-4 after McKelvie had tied things up at four games apiece. That's when the sophomore found his "second wind," powering through for wins in the next three games to end the match.

It marked the first dual match win of the year for McKelvie, who played at the No. 3 spot in the lineup for the first time this season and improved to 5-2 in three-set contests on the year.

UC Davis opened up a 1-0 lead in the match after battling back to take the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The Lions opened with a 6-1 win at No. 2 to start doubles play, but James Wade and Tommy Lam evened things up with a 7-5 win, and the Aggies' duo of Alec Adamson and Adam Levie clinched the point with an identical 6-4 victory at the top spot.

Felix Van Kann took home a win at No. 4 by the score of 6-2, 6-1, to draw LMU even, but singles wins by Jesse Ross at No. 5 and Wade at No. 3 put the Lions' backs against the wall, giving UC Davis a 3-1 lead in the match. Down, but not out, LMU answered the bell with straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 6, knotting the match at three-all, and setting the stage for McKelvie's clincher.

Ross, a transfer from Santa Clara, improved to 2-2 in duals this season with a 6-4, 6-3, win over Todd Volmari, while reigning Big West Conference Player of the Week Wade took home a 6-4, 6-2, win over Charles Boyce to improve to 3-0 in dual matches and clinch his team-best 13th singles win of the year.

It's a quick turnaround for the Aggies, who return to the LMU Tennis Center on Saturday at 11 a.m. to take on Grand Canyon University. Live scoring for the match will be available online at http://www.lmulions.com/sports/m-tennis/spec-rel/loyo-m-tennis-livestats.html.
