TEMPE, Ariz. - Less that 24 hours removed from its season-opening victory against Northern Arizona, UC Davis returned to the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz., to face No. 32 Arizona State. Facing their first of three teams on this season's schedule that received a preseason ranking from the ITA, the Aggies battled valiantly, but fell to the Sun Devils by a 7-0 score.

Women's tennis will return to Davis with a 1-1 record and begin prepping for next week's road matches against Portland State and Portland. The team's season-opening five-match road trip will conclude on Jan. 30 in this year's Causeway matchup. Arizona State picked up the win in its inaugural match of the season.

Competing at No. 2 doubles, Tiffany Pham and Lani-Rae Green came the closest to winning a match, but came up short as one break in serve was the difference in their 6-4 defeat.

That service break handed the Aggies a difficult setback; when play was halted after the Sun Devils won the prerequesite two doubles contests to earn the first team point of the afternoon, Layla Sanders and Kristy Jorgensen were leading 4-3 in their No. 1 doubles matchup.

In singles action Jessie Lee pushed ASU's Joanna Smith to the brink in the first set of their No. 5 singles match. Unfortunately for UC Davis, Smith held on to win the first frame, 7-5, before ending her match after posting a 6-1, score in the second set.

Competing at No. 2 and No. 6 singles respectively, Pham and Kamila Kecki battled back in the second frame after dropping the first set in their respective matches. However, the Sun Devils' Stephanie Vlad and Gussie O' Sullivan each withstood a late Aggie charge and recorded straight-set victories over their visitors.

In singles exhibition action, Jorgensen and Alex Osborne split their first two sets; the latter captured the first set, 6-1, the former rebounded to even the overall score at one set apiece after recording a 6-3 triumph in the second frame. However, Osborne rebounded in the third set by downing Jorgensen, 6-1, to win her match.
