UC Davis opens spring season with a 5-2 win

TEMPE, Ariz. - For the third time in the last four years, UC Davis opened its spring season with a dual against Northern Arizona University. As was the case on each previous occasion, the Aggies downed the Lumberjacks, 5-2, in Friday's non-conference match at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

With its neutral-court win, UC Davis opens its season with a 1-0 overall record and its fifth season-opening triumph as a Division I program (against three losses, all to ranked opposition). NAU opens its year with a 0-1 mark.

Layla Sanders and Kristy Jorgenson posted the Aggies' first match victory when the pair easily downed the Lumberjacks' No. 1 doubles team of Emilia Box and Johanna Vang, 6-3. Even though NAU rebounded to take one doubles match of its own, the first team point of the season was collected by the good guys when Kamila Kecki and Frederique Sleiffer defeated Sara Brown and Livia Hollosy, 7-5, to take a 1-0 overall lead into singles competition.

Tiffany Pham doubled the Aggies' advantage when she was the first to finish her singles match. By defeating NAU's Hailey Rochin in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) at the No. 2 position, UC Davis quickly jumped out to a 2-0, overall lead.

Competing in her inaugural singles match as an Aggie, Jessie Lee stretched her team's lead to 3-0 when she walked off her court with a 6-1, 6-3, straight-set victory over Jordan Denesik.

The Lumberjacks were able to post their first team point before the Aggies officially collected their first dual victory of 2015 when Kecki won her singles matchup, against Livia Hollosy, by matching 6-3 set scores.

Kecki was not the only Aggie to earn sweep both matches played as Sanders tacked on the final team point of the day with a gritty three-set comeback win.

Coincidentally, each Aggies' singles victory was earned against the same person faced in the doubles round. In Kecki's situation, Hollosy suffered a loss alongside Brown before dropping another match on her own accord as the day progressed. For Sanders, Vang fell in each round.

After falling in the first set, 6-3, Sanders stormed back to take the next two, 6-4 and 6-3, to snatch a potential victory away from NAU's top singles player.

In exhibition action, UC Davis dominated those singles matches as well, beginning with Jorgensen's 6-3, 6-3, straight-set victory vs. Sara Brown. The other singles contest saw Samantha Martino come-from-behind to top Sawah Spruch, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Less that 24 hours after visiting the Whiteman Tennis Center, to face NAU in the first of back-to-back duals in as many days, UC Davis will face No. 32 Arizona State Saturday morning at 11 a.m. (PT). The Sun Devils are the first ranked opponent the Aggies will face this year.
