DAVIS, Calif. -- With the UC Davis women's swimming team ringing in the New Year last weekend with the Aggie Open, the Aggies' divers take their turn in their first competition of 2015, heading to Southern California to compete in the three-day Bruin Diving Invitational hosted by UCLA at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.
The women's competition begins on Saturday (Jan. 17) at 8:30 a.m., with the 3-meter prelims, followed by the finals at 11 a.m. Sunday will see the 1-meter prelims and finals beginning at 11 a.m., followed by the platform on Monday morning at 10 a.m.
A UC Davis contingent of Audrey DeNeffe, Lucy Lafranchise, Angelina Proshak, Shannon Stewart, Hanna Tears, and Ani Vemury, will compete against a field that includes divers from nine other schools: UCLA, USC, California, Cal Poly, Fresno State, San Jose State, Utah, Hawai'i, and San Diego State.
This will be the second diving-only invitational for the Aggies this season after a solid showing at the Wildcat Diving Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona back in November. In Tucson, sophomore Serena Yee posted a pair of top-five finishes in the consolation finals on both the 1- and 3-meter boards, while Lafranchise (seventh) and DeNeffe (eighth) were in the top 10 of the championship final on the platform.
Tears also finished third in the 3-meter consolation final while Lafranchise was third in the low board consolation final.
DeNeffe and Lafranchise have both posted top-five scores on the 1-meter board, including a school-record 278.55 by DeNeffe in a dual against Nevada on Nov. 8. Lafranchise's 275.85 against San Jose State on Oct. 17 is the third-best score in school history on the low board. The duo have also posted top-five scores on the 3-meter board: DeNeffe with a school-record 296.85 and Lafranchise with a 282.45 (fourth-best all-time) against the Wolf Pack.
Both have met the minimums for the NCAA Zone Championships to be held on March 9-11 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
