STANFORD, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore James Wade posted a three-set singles victory over Stanford's John Morrissey at the No. 2 position, while two teammates extended their matches to three sets against their respective opponents, as the visiting Aggies battled in a 6-1 defeat to the No. 30-ranked Cardinal in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

"It was a good effort by all, especially the three guys that went three sets," Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "I'm proud of all of them and expect to get better as we go forward."

Wade rebounded from a loss in the opening set to take the next two against Morrissey, posting a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, victory against last year's No. 1 singles player for host Stanford (1-0). Wade and freshman teammate Tommy Lam also starred in doubles, tying up the Cardinal duo of Nolan Paige and Yale Goldberg at five games apiece before play was suspended following Stanford wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.

The sophomore wasn't the only one to put a scare into the Cardinal, as sophomore Bryce McKelvie bounced back from an opening set loss to even up his match at the No. 4 position against No. 75 David Hsu. The two then battled deep into a deciding third set before Hsu edged McKelvie, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

Freshman Everett Maltby, who led the Aggies (0-1) with 11 singles wins during the fall, also went three sets in his contest against David Wilczynski, jumping out to an early lead with a 7-6 victory in the first set before falling, 6-1, 6-1, to close out the match.

Stanford posted straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5, to complete the 6-1 victory.

With five of its first six duals held away from home, UC Davis welcomes former Big West Conference rival Pacific to the Marya Welch Tennis Center for its home opener on Saturday (Jan. 17) at 1 p.m., in Davis, Calif.
