Aggies work overtime in 1-1 draw with Gaels

Box Score Sept. 28, 2014

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior defender Ramon Martin Del Campo netted his first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 64th minute, but visiting Saint Mary's was quick to equalize, drawing even five minutes later and forging a 1-1 draw with UC Davis on an overcast and rainy Sunday afternoon at the Aggies Soccer Field.

Sunday marked a school record-tying fourth consecutive draw for the Aggies, moving them to 2-0-7 overall on the season and matching the 2012 squad, which posted a tie in four straight contests from Aug. 27-Sept. 6 of that year.

The Gaels moved to 5-2-2 with the result.

It was the seventh consecutive double-overtime match for UC Davis -- extending another school record -- and was the Aggies' eighth overtime contest in nine games overall this season. Only UC Davis' 2-1 win over Canisius on Aug. 31 finished in regulation as the Aggies have played all but 17 seconds of a possible 160 minutes of overtime this season.

Following a scoreless first half that saw UC Davis out-shoot the Gaels by a 7-2 count, both offenses made adjustments and found more room to fire in the second period as the Aggies edged Saint Mary's, 8-7, in shot column. A UC Davis corner 20 minutes into the second half produced the Aggies' goal, as they drew a foul in the box on the attempt and were awarded a penalty kick.

Martin Del Campo, who had a penalty kick attempt denied against San Diego back on Sept. 7, made good on his second try from the spot this season, slotting his shot to the lower left side for a 1-0 advantage.

It was the first goal for the senior since he scored the tying goal in the 86th minute as part of a 2-2 draw at San Francisco on Sept. 6, 2012.

The lead didn't last long however, as Saint Mary's countered for the tying score five minutes later, drawing a foul on the far side of the field for a free kick. Cory Schmidt stepped over the ball and took a shot from about 50 yards out that bounced over a crowd of players in the box and into the right side netting for his first score of the season.

Andre Brown and Eddie Manella had shots go wide, while Brian Ford's attempt in the 75th minute was smothered by Gaels goalkeeper Andre Rawls to preserve the tie and send the match to overtime.

With the weather turning and rain beginning to fall, UC Davis finished with five of the six shots in the two extra periods, none closer than Lucas Mohageg's header in the 93rd minute off a long throw-in by Ryan Gross that just missed at the right post. The Aggies had the first four shots of the second extra period, including a header off a corner by Martin Del Campo that just missed, but Saint Mary's had the best chance in the closing seconds as Nicolas Gamp found himself on a breakaway against three defenders and the keeper, but pushed an attempt wide to the right as time expired.

Sunday marked the fifth, 1-1, result of the season for UC Davis -- all of them coming at home -- as the Aggies remained unbeaten in their last eight matches (2-0-6) at the Aggie Soccer Field.

Martin Del Campo and Matt Sheldon led all players with three shots on the afternoon, while Gamp, Michael Dingle, and Nathan Grixti, finished with two apiece for the Gaels.

With the rigors of non-conference play now behind them, UC Davis turns its attention to Big West Conference play next weekend, welcoming Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside to Northern California. The Aggies and Titans open on Thursday (Oct. 2) at 1 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Field, in a match that has been rescheduled from its original 7 p.m. start time at Aggie Stadium.

UC Davis then meets the Highlanders on Saturday (Oct. 4) at 3 p.m., also at Aggie Soccer Field.
