Sept. 20, 2014 STOCKTON, Calif. - Senior Chris Richardson and junior Sean Grab each scored four goals to lead 11th-ranked UC Davis to an 11-6 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the ninth game of the Kap7 NorCal Classic men's water polo tournament, hosted by Pacific. The Aggies also lost to the host Tigers by an 14-6 final to open the day.
UC Davis moves to 2-6 for the year.
The Aggies never trailed in the win over the Sagehens. Grab scored goals within a 25-second span to highlight a 3-0 start, then Richardson made it four unanswered with his power-play goal to open the second quarter. Senior Teddy Nicholson had a goal in each of the first two quarters to help UC Davis to a 5-2 halftime lead.
Richardson scored twice in the third period while Grab hit natural goals in each of the third and fourth to help the Aggies maintain at least a three-goal edge the rest of the way. Senior Michael Wright accounted for the balance of the scoring, finding the back of the net to close the third frame.
In Saturday's early contest, Ben Stevenson scored five goals to help No. 6 Pacific ride out an 8-2 halftime lead in a rematch of the previous weekend's sudden-victory battle. Nicholson scored two goals for UC Davis while freshman goalkeeper Spencer Creed recorded 10 saves.
Sean Grab scored within the first two minutes of the contest to even the score at 1-1, only to have Stevenson pile on two additional goals in a 5-0 run to finish the quarter. Nicholson hit his first goal in the second quarter, but Stevenson netted his fourth and fifth scores on the next two Tiger possessions.
Sophomore Charlie Hargrave put up the lone Aggie goal in the third. Nicholson scored his second goal a minute into the fourth, Shawn Welch converted a 6-on-5 chance with three minutes left, and Spencer Galli added the sixth UC Davis goal with 25 seconds remaining.
The Aggies converted just one of eight extra-man opportunities against Pacific, compared to 2-for-5 against Pomona-Pitzer.
UC Davis will face the winner of the Air Force/Loyola Marymount game at noon on Sunday. Both of its Day 2 games take place at June Fergusson Pool on the campus of San Joaquin Delta College.
