COLUMBUS, Ohio - - Ian Palmer and
Ryan Gross each scored goals after UC Davis fell behind Canisius in the early minutes Sunday and the UC Davis men's soccer team made them stand up the rest of the way during a 2-1 victory at the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Aggies went unbeaten during the weekend tournament after tying the host Buckeyes in a scoreless opener on Friday night. UC Davis is 1-0-1 overall while Canisius fell to 0-2. Kris Schultz had four saves to aid the Aggies' defensive efforts.
The Golden Griffins struck first on Sunday when Jon Cary delivered a cross from the near side and Asani Samuels headed it in from eight yards out for his first goal of the season. But the lead wouldn't last long because Matt Sheldon and Palmer connected just five minutes later with the equalizer. Sheldon put a low cross for Palmer who scored to the left side of the goal.
The game remained tied until halftime but Schultz came up with an early save to start the second half and Gross followed with a 20-yard shot to the back left of the net just four minutes later to give UC Davis the lead for good. Schultz saved Cary's shot in the 83rd minute, did the same to Lucian Preis in the 87th and the Aggies came away with the win.
UC Davis outshot Canisius 15-13 while each team had seven corners. Dashiell MacNamara led the Aggies with four shots - two of them on goal - while Gross put all three of his shots on goal.
UC Davis will open its home season on Friday when it hosts LMU at 5 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Stadium. The Aggies' will host San Diego at 1 p.m. next Sunday.
