DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Haley Hughes scored from just beyond the left corner of the penalty box just two minutes into the overtime period to lead UC Davis to a 1-0 victory over Quinnipiac in collegiate women's soccer action at Aggie Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 3-1 for the season. The Bobcats slip to 0-3.

UC Davis emerged victorious in its first overtime match of the year, and for the first time since exiting Aggie Soccer Field last season with a 1-0, double-overtime win against CSUN.

Hughes' goal, her first of the season, came via an outlet pass from sophomore teammate Mari Pastor. After UC Davis won possession to start the extra frame, Pastor redirected a Charlotte Ellberg ball past the Quinnipiac back line to her advancing teammate in the 92nd minute. Hughes then sent a low shot past Bobcat goalkeeper Tori Graessele.

"I thought Quinnipiac was well coached, they were consistently placing 11 players behind the ball whenever we tried to create scoring opportunities," said UC Davis head coach Twila Kaufman following the match.

"They sat in their third of the pitch with great patience, sometimes that is the hardest type of soccer to break down. We missed some quality chances before the game-winner, but we were able to keep our cool and play with poise."

That match-winner was the Aggies' 12th shot attempt, and fourth on goal. Neither team managed any substantial opportunities in the first half, but UC Davis fired eight shots and had six corner kicks in the second half. Senior Lexi Poppoff had the first major scoring chance in the 65th minute when she beat her defender and found herself 1-v-1 along the left side. However, Graessele got just enough of her left keeper glove on Poppoff's ensuing shot, and the ball rolled harmlessly toward the right corner.

Ellberg and Pastor narrowly missed on back-to-back opportunities after a corner kick the 80th minute. Ellberg launched a 20-yard shot that bounced off the crossbar toward Pastor. In turn, Pastor held her position and attempted a header on the rebound, but her shot rolled to the right of the cage.

Quinnipiac had just three shots, including two by Kelly Caruso, none of which were on frame.

"I'm really proud of this team to take care of its home field and earn two wins.

"This game always comes down to players making the proper decisions and making plays. Today, everyone contributed to this result," added Kaufman.

UC Davis returns to action against Southeast Missouri at Air Force on Sept. 5.
