COLUMBUS, Ohio - - A defensive stalemate in which each team held the other to just three shots on goal provided the storyline for the UC Davis men's soccer team on Friday night in its 0-0 season-opening double-overtime tie at Ohio State.
The game was played as part of the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Buckeyes outshot UC Davis 21-8 overall, including a 3-2 margin in the second overtime, but only three of their shots were on goal and were each stopped by Aggie goalie Kris Schultz.
Matt Sheldon had two of UC Davis' shots on goal while Ryan Gross had the other, but the Aggies were unable to solve Ohio State keeper Alex Ivanov who stopped all three.
The first half was played nearly even in the shots department with Ohio State taking eight of the game's 13 attempts. Each goalie had two saves. The Buckeyes held a 10-1 advantage in the second half but none were on goal.
In the first overtime, both teams didn't take a shot before five shots were tried in the second but to no avail.
Miguel Acevedo led UC Davis with three shots while Sheldon had two. Ramon Martin Del Campo, Matt Wiesenfarth and Gross each had two. Four players had three each for the Buckeyes.
UC Davis returns to action at the tournament on Sunday when its faces Canisius at 9 a.m. (PDT).
