DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Liliana Alvarez won her second individual title with a victory in the 200 breaststroke while Hilvy Cheung was named the league's Freshman of the Year, helping the Aggies pull away from the field and clinch their third Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship in the last four seasons on Saturday night at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif.
UC Davis finished with a total of 712.5 points -- the third-highest total in MPSF Championships history behind BYU's 732 in 2012 and the Aggies' 726 in 2011 -- to finish ahead of UC Santa Barbara, which claimed runner-up honors with 638 points. Brigham Young (620), Hawaii (478), Pacific (340), Cal Poly (317.5), San Diego (302), and Loyola Marymount (252), round out the standings.
Alvarez set a pool record with her winning time of 2:12.84, breaking the mark established by UC Santa Barbara's Katie Records (2:13.41) last season. Alvarez's time lowered her NCAA "B" standard by more than half a second and stood just six-tenths off her own MPSF meet record set during the 2011 event.
Maya Sprinsock joined her in the championship finals of the 200 breaststroke, finishing eighth with a time of 2:21.75, while Elise Roberts (10th, 2:19.65), Caroline Weston (14th, 2:22.42), and Hailey Ferko (16th, 2:24.43), all gained points in the consolation final.
En route to her Freshman of the Year honor, Cheung finished second in the 200 fly on Saturday night with a time of 1:56.14, joining MPSF Swimmer of the Year Andrea Ward of UC Santa Barbara in breaking the meet record of 1:57.27 set by Rachel O'Brien in 2013. Both swimmers lowered their NCAA "B" qualifying marks while Cheung's time lowered her school record in the event by more than a second, besting her previous time of 1:57.60 set at the Mizzou Invitational earlier this year.
The Aggies placed three in the championship final of 1,650 free and were led by Marissa Brown, who finished third with a time of 16:45.04. Brown's time was the fastest by an Aggie this season while Kirsten Brand, who finished fifth, posted the third-fastest time in the event in school history with a time of 16:49.19. Lexy Troup was sixth with a time of 17:00.12, while Cara Silvas finished 11th with a time of 17:26.48.
In the 100 free, Haley Porter finished second with a season-best time of 50.02 -- the third-fastest 100 free in school history -- missing an NCAA "B" standard of 49.99 by just .03 of a second. Katie Edwards gave the Aggies a pair in the championship final, finishing sixth with a time of 51.00.
Samantha Shellem finished fifth in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.12 -- the fifth-fastest time of the season by an Aggie -- while UC Davis also received points from Sabrina Cochrane (12th, 2:03.23) and Hilary Hunt (t13th, 2:04.00) in the consolation finals.
The Aggies' 400 free relay quartet of Shellem, Cochrane, Brand, and Edwards, finished fourth (3:23.91) to wrap up the swimming portion of the competition.
Earlier in the day at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena, Calif., Audrey DeNeffe gained valuable points on the platform, finishing third with a score of 203.80 to pace a group of four Aggie scorers. Lucy Lafranchise was 10th (176.55), Hanna Tears finished 13th (163.25), and Jennifer Meyer was 14th (150.40).
