LOS ANGELES -- Facing, perhaps, its toughest test of the season on the road, No. 2-ranked USC swept past visiting UC Davis, winning eight of the nine matches on the day en route to a 7-0 victory over the Aggies on Friday afternoon at the Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles.
The loss ended UC Davis' season-best four-match winning streak as the Aggies fell to 4-5 overall on the year. UC Davis takes a quick break from dual match play to compete in at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships next weekend on Feb. 27-March 2 in La Jolla, Calif., followed by a dual against Villanova on the final day.
Featuring three of the nation's top 50 singles players and the country's No. 35-ranked doubles squad, the Trojans improved to 8-1 overall on the season with the victory -- the first of two dual matches on the day for USC, which was scheduled to face UC Santa Barbara later in the day.
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the Trojans jumped out early by winning the doubles point, taking home victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions for the 1-0 lead. UC Davis' tandem of freshman James Wade and Parker Kelley came the closest to an upset with an 8-5 loss at the No. 2 spot while Alec Adamson and Adam Levie trailed by a 7-5 score at the No. 1 position before play was halted.
In singles play, USC won all six matches in straight sets en route to the win. Adamson was able to prolong his match against Connor Farren at the No. 2 position in the second set, but eventually fell, 6-3, 7-5.
