Aggies Roll Past Hawks, Gaels in Wins

Feb. 15, 2014

DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis team heads into its Causeway Cup clash with Sacramento State with momentum, closing out its six-match homestand with a pair of wins over Holy Names and Saint Mary's on Saturday in a doubleheader at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis, Calif.

The wins extended the Aggies winning streak to three as they improved to 3-4 overall on the season and are scheduled to meet the rival Hornets on Sunday (Feb. 16) at 1 p.m. at the Rio Del Oro Racket Club in Sacramento.. The Hawks, in their inaugural season, fell to 0-2 overall while the Gaels, playing for the first time since Feb. 1, fell to 4-2 overall.

In the opener, UC Davis rolled past Holy Names, winning the doubles point for the first time this season, getting wins by Alec Adamson and Adam Levie at the No. 1 position, 6-2, as well as Brett Bacharach and James Wade at No. 3 by the score of 6-1 to take the early lead.

The Aggies went on to take five of the six singles matches to clinch the victory, four of those in straight sets. Kyle Miller, Adamson, Wade, and Mitch Thorp posted easy wins, while Adam Luba rallied back from a first set loss to pull out a fifth point for UC Davis with a 4-6, 6-1, 11-9, win at No. 5 over the Hawks' Rafael Martinez.

In the team's second match of the day, the Aggies rallied back from losing the doubles point to claim victory in singles play over the Gaels, snapping a four-match losing streak against West Coast Conference teams. Wade, with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Alex Hunt at No. 4, and Bryce McKelvie, with a 6-5, 6-2, win over Wil Martin at No. 6, extended their team-best singles win streaks to four straight with their victories, while Parker Kelley and Bacharach also posted wins to help clinch the match.

With the win, wade won his team-best 15th singles match of the year, improving to 15-5 overall on the year and 6-1 in dual match play. It is the most wins for an Aggie since Nick Lopez won 15 matches in 2007-08.

Kelley won his second-consecutive match, 6-5, 6-1, over Nathan Lewis in the No. 5 position, while Bacharach posted a straight-set, 6-1, 6-2, win over Sam Bloore at the No. 3 spot.
