Dec. 10, 2014 DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore Hilvy Cheung was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Turbo Female Athlete of the Week on Wednesday after a stellar showing at the Texas Hall of Fame Swimming Invitational in Austin, Texas, last weekend.
It was the Fremont, California, native's second weekly honor from the conference office this year and the fourth overall for the Aggies, who also list seniors Samantha Shellem (Nov. 5) and Hilary Hunt (Nov. 12) among weekly award-winners this season. Cheung won her first award of the season back on Oct. 22 after winning six events during the opening weekend of action and was honored for the third time in her career.
Cheung totaled three NCAA "B" cuts during her time in Austin in both butterfly distances, including a 1:57.50 in the 200 fly to win the consolation final and rank 29th nationally in the event, two seconds under the "B" standard and shaving nearly four seconds off her prelim time in the process.
In the 100 fly, she swam the fastest time by an MPSF student-athlete this season, touching in a time of 53.55 (ranking 53rd nationally), and moved up to third in the league in the 200 IM (2:02.92) and fifth in the 100 free with a personal best (50.98).
The Aggies finished with 87 points to finish 10th out of 17 teams at the Texas Invite, which closed out the fall portion of their schedule. UC Davis doesn't return to the pool until Jan. 10, hosting the Aggie Open at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
