DAVIS, Calif. -- Coming off a pair of dual meet wins on the road last weekend, the UC Davis women's swimming and diving team returns to home waters this Saturday, welcoming unbeaten Nevada to the Schaal Aquatics Center for a Noon swim.
After a season-opening loss, the Aggies have rebounded quickly thanks to back-to-back victories against Loyola Marymount (142-111) and Fresno State (172-128). Senior Samantha Shellem led the way with four individual victories and a relay win en route to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Turbo Female Athlete of the Week honors for the fourth time in her career.
Shellem posted wins in the 1000 free (10:36.0) and 200 back (2:07.55) against the Lions, following that up with wins in the 200 free (1:55.76) and 400 IM (4:30.29) against the Bulldogs, while anchoring the winning 400 free relay squad with a 52.54 split. She also added runner-up finishes in the 200 free (1:55.76) against LMU and the 500 free (5:06.25) against FSU.
Marissa Brown, who set season-best times in both the 500 and 1000 free at Fresno State, and Hailey Ferko also posted a pair of wins as the Aggies won eight individual events and a relay against the Lions. Hilary Hunt, who also posted season-bests in both backstroke events, and Hilvy Cheung added a pair of wins a day later against the Bulldogs, as UC Davis won 11 of the 16 events en route to the victory.
Junior Lucy Lafranchise led the divers with a win on the 1-meter in Fresno, while junior Audrey DeNeffe finished second in both the 1- and 3-meter events against the Bulldogs.
The Wolf Pack, who haven't competed in almost two weeks, come into Davis having won four straight to start the season, finishing first in a quad meet with Pacific, Fresno Pacific, and Simon Fraser, on Oct. 24, before downing Mountain West Conference rival Fresno State, 172-152, a day later. It is the best start for Nevada since 2011-12.
Last season, the two teams went down to the wire in Reno, with the Wolf Pack needing a 1-2 finish in the final event (800 free relay) to secure the win, but UC Davis' foursome of Haley Porter, Katie Edwards, Kirsten Brand, and Shellem, finished second by more than 12 seconds, giving the Aggies the cushion they needed for the, 151-149, win -- their fourth straight victory in the series.
Individually, Brown, Hunt, Cheung, and Porter, combined for eight of UC Davis' 10 wins on the day. Brown posted a win in the 500 and 1000 free, Hunt doubles in both backstroke distances, Cheung took first in both fly events, and Porter added wins in both sprint free events.
