Nov. 5, 2014 DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Samantha Shellem was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Turbo Female Athlete of the Week on Wednesday after helping the Aggies' swimming and diving team to a pair of dual meet wins last weekend.
It is the fourth career honor for Shellem, who earned three weekly awards during the 2012-13 season, and became the second UC Davis swimmer to be honored by the MPSF coaches this year. Sophomore teammate Hilvy Cheung was named the athlete of the week back on Oct. 22.
Shellem racked up four individual victories and a relay win, touching first in both the 1000 free (10:36.00) and 200 back (2:07.55), while also placing second in the 200 free (1:55.76), as the Aggies posted a 142-111 win at Loyola Marymount.
A day later, the senior from La Verne, California, won both the 200 free (1:52.67) and led a 1-2-3 UC Davis sweep in the 400 IM (4:30.29), while anchoring the Aggies' winning 400 free relay squad with a 52.54 split, as the they went on to defeat host Fresno State, 172-128. She also finished second in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.25.
UC Davis returns to the Schaal Aquatics Center this weekend, welcoming Nevada for a dual on Saturday (Nov. 8) at Noon.
