Nov. 2, 2014 MORAGA, Calif. - - Alec Adamson won two matches to claim a share of the Flight A singles title at the Saint Mary's Gaels Classic on Sunday while the Aggies' James Wade and Bryce McKelvie took down the top two seeds, respectively, as the UC Davis men's tennis team ended the two-day tournament with strong finishes.
Play at the event was condensed by a day after rain on Friday delayed start of competition until Saturday. Because of the abbreviated scheduled, semifinal winners in each of the top two singles flights were declared co-winners. UC Davis enjoyed an impressive day on Saturday, advancing seven players into quarterfinal matches in the two flights.
One of those Aggies was Adamson, who rode his fourth seed to wins over Cal Poly's Devin Barber (6-4, 6-2) and teammate James Wade (6-4, 6-1), finishing the tournament with a 4-0 record. Wade earned his spot in the semifinals against Adamson after upsetting top-seeded Oskar Wikberg of Cal in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
McKelvie enjoyed an upset of his own, rallying to beat second-seeded Mads Engsted of Cal. Engsted rolled to a 6-2 win in the opening set before McKelvie turned the tables to post a 6-2 win in the second. McKelvie then sealed the upset with a victory in the third-set tiebreaker. Dioga Rocha beat McKelvie in the semis, 6-1, 6-1, on his way to sharing first place in the flight with Adamson.
Eli Whittle grabbed a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Deric Wanland of Sacramento State in his quarterfinal round matchup in Flight B before being falling to San Francisco's Christian Brockstedt, 7-6, 6-2 in the semifinals. Brockstedt advanced to the semifinals after edging the Aggies' Jesse Ross in a third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0.
Everett Maltby and Tommy Lam each lost their quarterfinal contests on Sunday. Rocha edged Maltby, 7-6, 6-3, in the top flight while top-seeded Wyatt Houghton of Cal was a straight-set winner over Lam in Flight B.
Lam and Maltby, and Ross and Wade, each lost their doubles' quarterfinals matches on Sunday - both of them in close sets - while Adam Levie was a straight-set winner against Cal Poly's Garrett Auproux in the voluntary singles consolation division.
The tournament brought to a close the fall season for UC Davis which will now break until taking on Stanford on Jan. 13 in their spring dual opener.
