DAVIS, Calif. -- Thanks to her swimming the fastest backstroke times in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this season, senior Hilary Hunt was named the MPSF/Turbo Female Athlete of the Week on Wednesday as UC Davis prepares to host conference rival BYU in a dual this weekend at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
The Aggies and Cougars face off on Saturday (Nov. 15) at 10 a.m., as two of the top three teams from last season's MPSF Championships (UC Davis 1st, BYU 3rd) face-off in Davis.
Hunt's weekly honor is the first in the senior's career after she sprinted to a win in the 100 back (56.18) and finished second in the 200 back (2:02.63) -- accounting for the fastest times in both events in the MPSF this season. The third Aggie to have weekly honors bestowed upon them in the last four weeks, Hunt also played a major role on the Aggie relay teams as her backstroke split of 26.55 helped the 200 medley relay team to a victory, while her split of 51.54 in the 400 free relay helped UC Davis to a second-place finish.
Both relay teams posted MPSF bests, as the 200 medley relay finished in a time of 1:44.28, while the 400 free relay touched in a time of 3:28.83.
Hunt was part of an Aggie performance that featured record-setting scores by diver Audrey DeNeffe, who set school marks on both the 1- and 3-meter boards as UC Davis battled Nevada last weekend. DeNeffe scored a school-record 278.55 on the low board, edging the previous mark of 278.40 set by Hanna Tears, and then added a score of 296.85 to eclipse Jamie Flynn's benchmark of 293.55 set in 2008, to qualify for the NCAA Zone meet for the first time in her career.
Fellow diver Lucy Lafranchise finished behind DeNeffe on both boards, but compiled personal bests in both events to qualify for the NCAA Zone meet for the third consecutive season. Lafranchise scored a 272.47 on the 1-meter and 282.45 on the 3-meter, besting the qualifying scores of 265 and 280, respectively.
Sophomore Hilvy Cheung joined the win parade for the Aggies, touching in a time of 2:02.16 to win the 200 fly, finishing nearly one second faster than the runner-up, and two-tenths better than her previous season best. Freshman Courtney Schultz also broke the 24-second barrier for the second time this season to bring home individual honors in the 50 free with a time of 23.95 to lead a 1-2-4 UC Davis finish.
BYU visits Northern California in search of its first win after falling to No. 18 UCLA and UC Santa Barbara in a double-dual to open the season on Oct. 25 and dropping a dual to UNLV by the score of 170-130 last weekend.
A young Cougars' squad got diving wins by Ali Tippetts and Mackenzie Rands on the 1-meter and 3-meter, respectively, against the Rebels, while Vanessa Moffatt (who doubled in the 500 and 1,000 free), Ciera Marsh Keller (100 back), and Riley Buer (100 breast), also brought home victories for BYU.
