DAVIS, Calif. -- Having suffered its first dual defeat in almost two years, the UC Davis women's swimming and diving team looks to return to form with a pair of road duals this weekend. The Aggies head south on I-5 to Los Angeles to take on Loyola Marymount on Saturday (Nov. 1) at 3:30 p.m., before coming back to the Central Valley to take on Fresno State on Sunday (Nov. 2) at 1 p.m.
Saturday will mark the first dual of the season for the Lions, who opened with six event wins and a first-place team finish at the PCSC Relays at Biola University followed by another eight victories and a slew of top-five finishes at the Malibu Invitational. Kristen Clarno won a pair of individual events and swam a relay leg to pace the Lions in Malibu, while Kjirsten Magnuson won the 50 back and placed among the top three in four other events.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, close out a three-meet homestand against the Aggies on Sunday after finishing second at their own Bulldog Invitational, which featured Mountain West rivals San Jose State and Air Force, and dropping their first dual of the season to Nevada, 172-125. Leah Hatayama (50 free) and Tarryn Rennie (100 fly) took home individual titles against the Wolf Pack, while Esme Gullick had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100 and 200 back, along with the second-place 400 medley relay.
UC Davis, which had its string of 16 consecutive dual meet wins snapped in its season opener against San Jose State at Schaal Aquatics Center on Oct. 17, posted wins over both programs at home last season, downing Fresno State by the score of 140-111 before topping LMU, 178-116, on "Senior Day" prior to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
In the opener against the Spartans, the Aggies trailed early, but rallied to close to within five points of San Jose State in its season-opening dual, only to watch the Spartans pull away in the second half of the meet with wins in seven of the final eight events en route to a 172-128 victory. Sophomore Hilvy Cheung doubled in the 100 and 200 fly, while senior Samantha Shellem (200 free), freshman Courtney Schultz (50 free), and junior Hailey Ferko (100 breast), also brought home individual honors to kick-off the season.
It was quite a debut for Schultz, whose winning time of 23.79 in the 50 free was just .01 of a second off the school's top 10 list in the event and .14 off Kayleigh Foley's pool record set in 2012. Junior Lucy Lafranchise also finished second in both the one- and three-meter boards, including a score of 275.85 on the low board to post the second-highest score in school history in the event.
The Aggies rebounded quickly, turning around to claim six events in a non-scoring dual at Pacific, led by Cheung's four wins in the 200 fly, 200 IM, and a pair of relays. Sophomore Elise Roberts also posted a pair of wins in the 200 breast and as part of the 200 breast relay squad, while UC Davis claimed titles in the 200 fly and 200 back relays.
For her efforts, Cheung was named the MPSF/Turbo Female Athlete of the Week on Oct. 22 -- her second such weekly honor from the conference coaches after the 2013 Freshman of the Year took home her first award on Jan. 22 last season.
