DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis team brings the fall portion of its 2014-15 season to a close this weekend, sending a contingent to compete along with those from nine other schools at the Gael Classic hosted by Saint Mary's at the Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.
Alongside the Aggies and host Gaels, Bay Area rivals Cal and San Francisco join Pacific, Cal Poly, Denver, Sacramento State, Sonoma State, and Holy Names, in the three-day event that begins on Friday morning (Oct. 31) at 9 a.m., and concludes with championship matches on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 2).
Rain is forecast for the area on Friday and into Saturday so the schedules are subject to change.
"Every tournament presents challenges," Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "Really these fall events are great tests of what we have been working on and whether they work under pressure and also show the coaching staff and players what we will want to work on after the tournament is over. It's also lots of fun to get out and compete against other folks, be a team and cheer on your mates."
Sophomore Alec Adamson is the tournament's No. 2 seed in Flight A this weekend, while the Aggies have a pair of seeded doubles teams in juniors Brett Bacharach and Adam Levie as the No. 2 seed in Flight A and sophomores Jesse Ross and James Wade as Flight B's No. 2 seed.
UC Davis is coming off another stellar run at the 2014 USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals at Stanford, especially on the doubles side, where the duo of Adamson and Levie advanced to the main draw semifinals for the second consecutive season before falling in a marathon three-set battle with San Francisco's Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa.
Joining Adamson and Levie with a win in doubles was the duo of Wade and freshman Tommy Lam, who earned an easy first-round win over a team from Gonzaga before falling to the tournament's top seed in California's Gregory Bayane and Chasen Melton.
In singles, Wade added to his win total by advancing into the round of 32 following a pair of wins over Washington's Jeffrey Hawke and Sacramento State's Sean Kolar, while Bacharach and freshman Everett Maltby also posted first-round victories in the main draw.
"I like that our players are improving, and working at improving," Steidlmayer said. "I see our guys pushing each other in practice and cheering each other on in match play. There haven't been any major disappointments at this stage - minor ones like losing matches we can win - yet, overall it has been a really productive fall training period."
Thus far, Maltby has led the way in the win column, sporting a 9-2 singles record through three events this fall, while McKelvie and Wade are right behind him with seven wins apiece. In doubles, Adamson and Levie have won six of eight contests, while the combination of Lam and Ross are perfect 3-0. However, wins aside, Steidlmayer has been impressed with the play of all his student-athletes and how well the new faces have meshed with the returning players.
"Our new players are about what I expected: good players," Steidlmayer said. "I believe all of them will really help us at some point this season and into the future. No real surprises for us as they all have good hearts, work at their games, are good teammates, and generally care about our team as a whole. They are learning how to keep up with the demands UC Davis puts on them, athletically and otherwise, and are going to help us continue to become better."
