Aggie Fall Invitational Draws & Results
DAVIS, Calif. -- Four singles players and a pair of doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinal round of their respective draws on Friday afternoon as the UC Davis men's tennis team closed out a solid day one of play at the 2014 Aggie Fall Invitational at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on campus.
Sophomores Alec Adamson and fourth-seeded Bryce McKelvie, along with freshman Everett Maltby, each won a pair of matches to kick-off the tournament, including Maltby's straight-set upset of the top-seeded player in Flight B, California's Wyatt Houghton, by the score of 7-6, 6-2. Maltby defeated Alec Wagner of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 6-2, earlier in the day for his first win as an Aggie, and will meet another Gael, Sam Bloore, in Saturday's quarters at 10:30 a.m.
Adamson battled back for a three-set win over Fresno State's Euan McIntosh, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, and took home a win over Nevada's Moez Chargui in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to stand as the only UC Davis singles player still alive in Flight A. Adamson opens day two action on Saturday morning against Sacramento State's Sean Kolar.
After advancing to the round of 16 following an injury to Nevada's Peter O'Donovan, the fourth-seeded McKelvie posted his first win of the fall with a straight-set win over Fresno State's Alex Vakouftis, 6-2, 6-2. He will meet Pacific's Bernardo Oliveria in the Flight B quarterfinals with the possibility of meeting his teammate Maltby in the semifinals on Sunday morning, should both advance.
Sophomore transfer Jesse Ross won his opening match in Flight B in dominating fashion over San Francisco's Jason Lee, 6-0, 6-0, for his first win as an Aggie, and followed that up with a, 7-6, 6-2, win over Matthew Campana of Saint Mary's. He faces second-seeded Robert Allan of Nevada in Saturday's quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m.
In other singles action, freshman Tommy Lam was also a winner in his UC Davis debut with a, 6-4, 6-2, victory over Pacific's Ashwin Sharma, but fell in his round of 16 contest to the Wolf Pack's Allan in a three-set marathon, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
Junior Brett Bacharach and sophomore James Wade fell in their Flight A opening round match-ups in straight sets to Stanford's Trey Strobel and Sacramento State's Marek Marksoo, respectively, while junior Adam Levie was defeated by California's Jordan Smith in straight sets in Flight B.
In Flight A doubles, the tandem of Adamson and freshman Tommy Lam advanced when San Francisco's Christian Brockstedt and Jason Lee pulled out due to injury. The Aggies' duo meets Fresno State's Youssef Hassan and McIntosh on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
Over in Flight B doubles, Maltby and Jesse Ross won their first round match-up over Fresno State's Jakob Keppelmann and Vakouftis, 8-6, and are scheduled to meet Sonoma State's Vincent Pagnetti and Sullivan Roche on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
