SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UC Santa Barbara's Nick DePuy one-touched a pass from teammate Ismaila Jome in the 99th minute for the game-winning strike on Wednesday night, lifting host UC Santa Barbara to a 1-0 victory over visiting UC Davis at Harder Stadium.
The loss was only the second of the season for the Aggies (6-2-9 overall, 4-2-2 in the Big West Conference), who set a new NCAA record with their 12th overtime match of the season. The Gauchos improved to 8-6-3 overall and moved into a tie with UC Davis for the top spot in a now crowded North Division with 14 points.
Sophomore Armando Quezada finished with four saves, including a pair of key stops in the final three minutes to send the match to overtime, while the Aggies' defense cleared another two off the line -- one on a header by Drew Murphy in the 87th minute and the second on a shot by Charlie Miller in the 96th minute.
However, UC Davis couldn't get to DePuy's game-winner with just over a minute left in the first overtime period as Jome played a low cross to the far post to UCSB's leading scorer, who went top-shelf on his first touch to end the match. Ryo Fujii added an assist on DePuy's sixth goal of the year as the Gauchos avenged a 1-0 double-overtime loss to the Aggies on Oct. 18 in Davis.
A busy Quezada kept the Gauchos off the board in the 35th minute, pushing aside a long-range attempt by DePuy, and added another stop in the 55th minute, diving to punch away a volley by Murphy to keep the match scoreless.
UC Santa Barbara outshot UC Davis, 19-4, for the match, holding the Aggies without a shot on goal as keeper Brandon Berke did not have to make a save in recording the shutout. DePuy, who missed the first meeting with the Aggies due to a red card suspension, led all players with nine shots on the night, putting three on frame.
Ryan Gross, Miguel Acevedo, Matt Sheldon, and Dashiell MacNamara, each finished with shots for the Aggies, who logged a pair of shots in each half of regulation.
With first and fourth place in the North Division separated by just four points, UC Davis looks to rebound on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 1) at 1 p.m., welcoming Sacramento State to the Aggie Soccer Field in the first of two home contests to close out the regular season.
The Hornets rallied from down a goal with a pair of scores in the final 12 minutes of regulation to hand Cal Poly a 2-1 defeat in San Luis Obispo, giving them 10 points in the standings, just one point behind the Mustangs for third place.
Prior to kick-off, the Aggies will salute their senior class as part of "Senior Day" festivities beginning at approximately 12:45 p.m.
