Wade advances in ITA Regional main draw

Oct. 17, 2014 Draws & Results

STANFORD, Calif. -- UC Davis sophomore James Wade posted a pair of wins to advance to the round of 32 on Friday afternoon, while two other players also posted first-round victories as the Aggies closed out day one at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, California.

Wade opened the tournament with a pair of grueling three-set victories, outlasting Washington's Jeffrey Hawke, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5), before rebounding from a first-set loss and going the distance to defeat Sacramento State's Sean Kolar, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. The second-year Aggie from San Marino, California, will face off against Fresno State's Euan McIntosh on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Wade is the only Aggie left standing in the main draw, although another pair of Aggies won their first-round match-ups to kick-off the tournament. Junior Brett Bacharach advanced when Sacramento State's Nirajan Ram retired due to injury in the third set, resulting in a 1-6, 6-2, 3-1, win for Bacharach. He was stopped in the second round, however, by ninth-seeded David Hsu of Stanford in straight sets in the round of 64 by the score of, 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Everett Maltby, who has been on a tear with wins in seven of his first eight matches, handed Oregon's Joey Swaysland a straight-set defeat, 6-3, 7-6 (0). The Sunnyvale, California, native had his run cut short, however, falling to ninth-seed William Griffith of California, 6-3, 6-3.

On the doubles side, two Aggie tandems are still alive in the main draw as Alec Adamson and Adam Levie, the tournament's No. 5 seed, had a first-round bye and will meet Oregon's ninth-seeded duo of Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Wade added to his win total on Friday, teaming up with freshman Tommy Lam to dispatch Gonzaga's Sergio Chip and Vicente Vargas, 8-2, in their opening round match-up, setting up a date with top-seeded Gregory Bayane and Chasen Melton of California at 9 a.m.

Consolation doubles play begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with consolation singles matches to follow beginning at 2 p.m.
