UCSB Classic Results - Day 1
Battle in the Bay Results - Day 1 DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis team finished off a banner day during its second weekend of the fall season, posting five victories in singles and doubles over their counterparts from Pacific-12 Conference schools to highlight the first day of play at both the Battle in the Bay and the UC Santa Barbara Classic on Friday.
It was a big day in the Bay Area for the Aggies at the prestigious Battle of the Bay in San Francisco as sophomore Alec Adamson and junior Adam Levie shined in both singles and doubles against Pac-12 opponents on Friday. Adamson downed USC's Rob Bellamy in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, and fought third-seeded, and last year's tournament champion, Andre Goransson of California to the bitter end in a three-set marathon before falling, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.
Levie, who battled to force a decisive third set before falling in his opening-round singles match to Stanford's Yale Goldberg, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, rebounded in a big way alongside Adamson in doubles, pulling off wins over the UCLA duo of Michael Guzman and Ryoto Tachi, and the fourth-seeded tandem of Filip Bergevi and Billy Griffith of California, by identical 8-3 scores.
Adamson and Levie continue their doubles run against Thomas Hunt and Arthur Weber of Saint Mary's in the main draw doubles quarterfinals on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. In the singles consolation bracket, Levie meets sixth-seeded Thomas Tenreiro of Boise State later in the day.
A little further south in Santa Barbara, a quartet of Aggies won their first round matches to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. In Flight B singles, junior Brett Bacharach outlasted UCLA's Nikolas Ramadan in three sets, 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, while sophomore Bryce McKelvie -- who won his flight at last weekend's Aggie Fall Invitational -- improved to 5-0 this fall with his three-set win over Big West Conference rival Naveen Beasley of Cal Poly, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.
Freshman Everett Maltby won his opening round match in Flight C, shutting out Meidy Chazeau of Grand Canyon University, 6-0, 6-0, while sophomore transfer Jesse Ross handed Luke Steeb of UC Santa Barbara a, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, defeat to advance in Flight D singles.
In doubles, the duo of Ross and Tommy Lam was the only UC Davis tandem to win its opening round contest, edging out Cal's Jordan Smith and Nikhil Jayashankar, 8-7.
