DAVIS, Calif. -

Responsible for two of her team's four hits, catcher JJ Wagoner ended UC Davis' home opener against No. 9 California with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate, but a four-run third inning by the Bears provided enough offense to down the Aggies 7-0 Wednesday afternoon at La Rue Field.

UC Davis will enter this weekend's Stanford Nike Invitational with a 3-3 overall record, Cal moves to 3-2 with the result.

Even though Cal scored its first run of in the first inning, strong pitching from UC Davis starter Jessica Thweatt prevented the Bears from causing additional damage throughout the rest of the frame.

Trailing 1-0, Thweatt struck out Cal catcher Victoria Jones and forced pitcher Jolene Henderson to ground out to teammate Amy Nunez at first to strand two Bears and end a potential rally.

With two outs in the second, and a Cal baserunner 60 feet away from scoring, Thweatt successfully mixed her pitches to force shortstop Cheyenne Cordes to end the Bears' opportunity with a groundout to Aggie third baseman Kayla Tyler.

Drawing a one of two walks off Henderson, Aggie centerfielder Krista Bava also recorded her first triple of the season to finish 1-for-2 on the day.

Belting four doubles throughout her time at last week's Fresno State Kick-Off, the sophomore transfer from Hughson, Calif., is responsible for five of the Aggies' 12 multi-base hits this season, and leads the team with a .375 batting average.

Left fielder Cassandra Ginnis was the other Aggie to earn a free pass to first.

UC Davis right fielder Jasmine Lee also recorded a multi-base hit, her second double of the year, with a shot to centerfield in the Aggies' half of the sixth.

But it was Cal's third-inning efforts that ultimately decided the game, as the Aggies were unable to erase the deficit created in that frame throughout the rest of the day.

UC Davis will now have two days to prepare for its weekend visit to Stanford as one of five teams participating in the Stanford Nike Invitational. Included in Saturday's schedule for the Aggies is a 2 p.m. matchup against Santa Clara and a 6:30 p.m. game against CSU Bakersfield. Sunday's slate features consecutive games against Santa Clara and host Stanford at 12:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively.
