DAVIS, Calif. - A Thomas Ramos goal less than four minutes after kickoff and two second-half penalty kicks for the Matadors saw Cal State Northridge take a 3-0 win over the UC Davis men's soccer team in Wednesday's conference opener at Aggie Soccer Field in Davis.

UC Davis drops to 2-5-2 overall with the loss - the Aggies' fourth straight - and 0-1 in Big West Conference action while Cal State Northridge improves to 4-4-1 and 1-0 in league play.

A mere three minutes after kickoff, Rene Anguiano pushed the ball down the right side before sending a pass across the middle to a waiting Ramos. Ramos controlled the ball, then buried a shot in the back of the net from six yards out to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead early.

UC Davis' first shot of the game came at the 17:07 mark when Lance Patterson got his head on a corner kick from Alex Henry, but the header was blocked by a Cal State Northridge defender and cleared out.

The Aggies were limited to only two shots in the first half.

UC Davis increased the offensive intensity in the second half, putting up seven shots, including Elliott Hord's attempt less than two minutes after kickoff. Hord's shot hit the goalpost, however, and was cleared out of play.

Cal State Northridge was awarded its first penalty kick in the 67th minute which Rafael Garcia safely converted, giving the Matadors a 2-0 lead. Garcia sealed the 3-0 win for the Matadors with a second penalty kick only 10 minutes later.

The Matadors outshot the Aggies by a 16-9 margin and earned 12 corner kicks to UC Davis' five.

Hord led the Aggies offensively with two shots while Garcia's five attempts led the Matadors.

UC Davis continues conference action by hosting UC Riverside on Saturday at 3 p.m.
