Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team knocked in the equalizing goal in the 24th minute, but the Aggies and Seattle settled for a 1-1 double overtime decision Friday at Aggie Soccer Field in Davis.

Both teams move to 0-1-1 on the season.

UC Davis, playing in its 2011 home opener, opened the game with an aggressive offense as Matt Sheldon and Kevin Schulte both took shots within the first four minutes of the game.

At the 5:42 mark, however, Ben Striar crossed a ball in front of Seattle's goal and, after a flurry in front of the goal as UC Davis tried to clear it out, Travis Heim knocked a shot in from six yards out.

The Aggies would tie the game in the 24th minute. Ethan Shawlee took the ball on the right side of the 18-yard box, then chipped it into the middle for Schulte. The sophomore's header bounced towards the lower right corner of the goal. Seattle goalkeeper Jake Feener was able to get a hand on it, but Schulte's header was too strong and settled in the back of the net.

Midway into the second half, Eddie Manella's corner kick found Shawlee in the penalty box, but his shot hit the post and came back onto the field. Manella gathered the ball and took a shot of his own, but it was blocked by a Seattle defender and the freshman's next attempt went wide.

UC Davis found themselves with their best chance of the game when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Lance Patterson's try was blocked by Feemer, who dove to his right and deflected the ball out towards his defenders who successfully cleared the ball.

Despite combining for five shot attempts in the first overtime period, the score still remained at 1-1, forcing a second set of extra time.

John Joslin started the second overtime with a strong shot off the kickoff, but it was blocked by a Seattle defender. Two minutes later, Tony Rascon's cross from the left sideline found Matt Sheldon, but his header attempt was just wide.

Seattle nearly had the winner with only 12 seconds of action remaining. Mikey Ramos slipped a pass along the ground to a waiting Elliot Richards, but Richards' attempt from 20 yards out was mishandled and sailed wide.

Led by Manella's five attempts, UC Davis outshot Seattle 24-12 and won 13 corner kicks to the Redhawks' six. Four other Aggies recorded three shots apiece.

For Seattle, Richards took four shots while Ramos and Heim each had three.

UC Davis goalkeeper Omar Zeenni recorded two saves in 110 minutes of action while Feener came up with eight saves for Seattle.

The Aggies return to action on Sunday when they play host to sixth-ranked UCLA. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field.
