EVANSTON, Ill. - The UC Davis men's soccer team held Northern Illinois, ranked as high as 13th nationally, scoreless throughout regulation, but the Huskies scored two minutes into overtime to claim a 1-0 win at the Lakeside Classic in Evanston, Ill. on Sunday.
The Aggies drop to 2-3-2 overall while the Huskies improve to 6-1-0.
UC Davis limited Northern Illinois to only three first half shots while taking six attempts of their own.
Only two minutes into the game, Kevin Schulte forced a save out of NIU goalkeeper Jordan Godsey and Lance Patterson followed with a high shot only 30 seconds later. At the 41:04 mark, John Joslin's corner kick found Patterson who headed the ball towards the net, but Godsey was there for his third save of the half.
The Northern Illinois offense intensified in the second half as the Huskies put up eight shots on goalkeeper Omar Zeenni and the UC Davis defense.
Zeenni came up with a save on James Stevenson's header attempt in the 67th minute, then warded off headers from Francis Otira and Karim Darbaki with less than ten minutes remaining in the half.
Tony Rascon and Matt Wiesenfarth both attempted shots for UC Davis, but neither could find the back of the net as time expired.
Gael Rivera hit the gamewinner for NIU in the 93rd minute. Isaac Kannah fed the ball across the box to Rivera who hit the shot from five yards out.
Wiesenfarth led the Aggies with three shots while Patterson finished with two attempts. Zeenni totaled five saves.
UC Davis begins a three-game homestand on Friday as the Aggies host Sacramento State at 4 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field.
