DAVIS, Calif. - Matt Sheldon put UC Davis men's soccer on the board with a 47th-minute goal and Ethan Shawlee's header in the 62nd minute secured a 2-0 exhibition win over visiting Chico State at Aggie Soccer Field on Tuesday.
Despite six shots by the Aggies and five from the Wildcats, neither team could find the back of the net in the first half.
Only two minutes into the second half, however, Alex Henry poked a pass through the Chico State defense to Sheldon, who took a touch around Wildcat goalkeeper James Stroud and slotted a shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
Play continued until the midway point of the half when UC Davis won a corner kick at the 62:25 mark. Kevin Schulte's cross in found Shawlee streaking down the middle and the 6-foot-3 defender sent a strong header into the goal to put the Aggies up 2-0.
The Aggie defense warded off 13 total shots from the Wildcats, eight of which came in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Omar Zeenni collected three saves in his 54 minutes in the net, including a save that came in the 16th minute of play. Chico State's Trevor Spurgeon took a high shot from the right side of the goal, forcing Zeenni to punch it over the top of the goal and out of bounds.
Matt Provencher recorded one save while freshman Kris Schultz had two.
John Joslin led UC Davis' offensively with five shots, two of which were on frame. With only a minute gone by in the second half, Joslin one-touched a well-placed pass from the wing towards goal, but the shot went high and out of play. In the 86th minute, Joslin forced a save from Chico State's Quinn Harter with a strong shot, then his attempt two minutes later hit the post and ricocheted back into Harter's arms.
Sheldon finished with three shots while Henry had two attempts.
For Chico State, four different players recorded two shots, including Ferid Celosmanovic whose two attempts were both on frame.
The Wildcats' three goalkeepers combined for five saves.
