May 8, 2011

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. - Eric Johnson was 4-for-5 while Scott Lyman and Justin Andrade each recorded three hits, but Pacific scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to escape a series sweep with a 5-4 win on Sunday at Klein Family Field in Stockton.

UC Davis' six-game winning streak comes to an end with the loss and the Aggies move to 15-26 overall and 8-7 in the Big West Conference. Pacific is now 15-27 overall and 7-11 in conference play.

Pacific scored first as Tyger Pederson took advantage of an error on Aggie third baseman Jason Andrade in the first inning to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

UC Davis tied the game with a run of its own in the fourth inning after Lyman led off the inning with a base hit, then moved to second on a passed ball. Johnson's fly ball to right field moved Lyman to third, then an RBI single from Andrade brought in the Aggies' designated hitter.

The Aggies would take a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning off a double from Lyman. With two outs and runners at first and second, Lyman's hit to left field brought in Scott Heylman and David Popkins.

Pacific tied the game with two runs in the sixth. Brian Martin, who led off the inning with a walk, scored on an RBI single from Curtis Gomez. Daniel Johnston then scored the tying run when he scored on a ground ball by Jason Taasaas.

Popkins would score in the seventh inning to give UC Davis a 4-3 lead, but Pacific would come right back again after Dustin Torchio tripled, then scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning. The TIgers would win it in the eighth after a fielding error on Heylman allowed Johnston to score for the 5-4 win.

Dayne Quist drops to 2-5 after being given the loss. The Aggies' lefty gave up five runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits and struck out four in 7.1 innings of work.

Pacific's Chris Larsen earned the win after entering the game in the seventh and holding UC Davis scoreless. He gave up four hits and struck out three batters.

UC Davis kicks off a week that features five games in six days on Tuesday when the Aggies travel to face Stanford at 5:30 p.m.
