Baseball Wins Sixth Straight Behind Lyman's Homer

May 7, 2011

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. - Scott Lyman hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give UC Davis the lead and Tom Briner struck out all five batters he faced as the Aggie baseball team took a 5-4 win over Pacific on Saturday at Klein Family Field in Stockton.

UC Davis wins its sixth straight game and is now 15-25 overall and 8-6 in the Big West Conference. Pacific drops to 14-27 overall and 6-11 in league play.

Pacific took a 3-1 lead in the fifth when Josh Simms and Jason Taasaas both scored on a base hit from Dustin Torchio, but UC Davis tied the game in the very next inning.

Eric Johnson led off the sixth with a base hit, then Scott Kalush walked to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Justin Andrade advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Ryan Allgrove brought them both in to score with a two-RBI single with two outs in the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Scott Heylman singled to start the inning to set up Scott Lyman's two-run shot. On a 1-2 pitch, Lyman connected on the next pitch and sent it over the left field fence to give UC Davis a 5-3 lead.

Pacific would pick up a run in the eighth as Tyger Pederson scored on an RBI single from Matt Carvutto.

Tom Briner, however, would shut down the scoring threat from Pacific. With the bases loaded and only one out, the junior right hander struck out Daniel Johnston and pinch hitter John Haberman to end the inning.

Briner continued his dominant performance into the ninth, striking out the side to earn his team-leading fifth save of the year.

Anthony Kupbens earned the win to move to 5-5 overall after giving up four runs on nine hits and striking out five Pacific batters.

Marcus Pointer threw a complete game for the Tigers and struck out seven Aggies but drops to 4-6 with the loss.

Offensively, all nine Aggie starters recorded a hit. Heylman went 2-for-4 while Lyman's home run was his only hit. Torchio and Carvutto each went 2-for-4 for Pacific.

UC Davis will look to sweep its second straight series as they face Pacific on Sunday in the series finale. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
