SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Scott Heylman and David Popkins each recorded two hits and Anthony Kupbens threw a complete game, but Cal Poly took a 4-2 win on Saturday, claiming the Big West Conference series at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo.
UC Davis moves to 16-28 overall and 8-9 in the Big West while Cal Poly is now 23-22 and 12-8 in conference action.
Scott Heylman gave the Aggies a quick 1-0 lead when he scored in the first inning. With the bases loaded and only one out, Eric Johnson hit into a fielder's choice which allowed Heylman to score after he singled to reach base.
Cal Poly immediately equalized when Bobby Crocker led off the Mustangs' half of the first inning with a home run to left field.
Kupbens limited Cal Poly to only two hits until the fifth inning when Mitch Haniger and Matt Jensen connected for back-to-back singles to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt from Elliot Stewart moved the runners up, then Jimmy Allen's base hit brought home Haniger. Crocker's sacrifice bunt allowed Jensen to score, then Denver Chavez hit a base hit to bring in Allen, giving Cal Poly a 4-1 lead.
Kupbens retired the side in the sixth and seventh innings, then gave up two singles in the eighth, but forced the final two batters he faced to fly out to end the inning.
UC Davis would get its final run of the game in the ninth inning. Johnson led off with a base hit, then stole second before moving to third on a ground out by Justin Andrade. Pinch hitter CJ Blom's single into center field brought Johnson home for the 4-2 final score.
Heylman was 2-for-4 with a double while Popkins was 2-for-4 as well. Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Crocker led the Mustangs offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Haniger and Allen each went 2-for-3.
Kupbens moves to 5-6 overall after giving up four runs on nine hits and striking out two in his second complete game of the year.
Cal Poly's Steven Fischback gave up only two runs on six hits and recorded an impressive 13 strikeouts en route to his sixth win of the year.
UC Davis and Cal Poly close the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
