Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Scott Lyman gave up only three earned runs on four hits and struck out six in seven innings, but the UC Davis baseball team could not overcome a three-run fifth inning by Cal Poly, falling 4-2 on Friday at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo.

UC Davis drops to 16-28 overall and 8-8 in the Big West Conference while Cal Poly improves to 22-22 and 11-8 in league play.

Lyman started strong, holding the Mustangs hitless until the third inning when Bobby Crocker turned a bunt to third base into a base hit, but was thrown out trying to steal second. The Aggie right-handed pitcher limited Cal Poly to only one hit in the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Cal Poly loaded the bases with one out, then Lyman walked Denver Chavez and hit Mike Miller with a pitch to allow two runs to score. A sacrifice fly by DJ Gentile brought home the third run of the inning, but Lyman forced JJ Thompson to fly out to right field to end the inning.

UC Davis scored a run of its own in the top of the sixth as Justin Andrade led off with a single to right center field, then moved to second on a base hit by David Popkins. Andrade scored on an RBI base hit by Scott Kalush to bring the score to 3-1.

The Mustangs scored their final run of the game after Crocker stole home with two outs in the seventh inning. He reached base after being hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the seventh, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Chavez, then advanced to third on Miller's ground out.

The Aggies were able to get another run in the eighth inning. Brett Morgan, Andrade and Scott Heylman walked to start the inning, loading the bases with nobody out and allowing Morgan to score on a sacrifice fly by Eric Johnson.

Popkins and Seth Batty each went 2-for-4 while Kalush was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

For Cal Poly, Crocker was 1-for-3 with two runs.
