Holmes Tosses Complete Game In 3-2 Win Over Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Alex Holmes scattered seven hits in a complete game win, as the UC Davis softball team scored three runs in the the third and held on for a 3-2 win over UC Riverside on Sunday at the Amy S. Harrison Softball Field

The Aggies had four hits and three extra base hits in the three-run third, to take the season series after splitting in a doubleheader yesterday. Holmes struck out seven and allowed no walks to earn her 15th win of the season. JJ Wagoner was a perfect 3 of 3 on the day with a run scored.

The Highlanders were paced on offense by Kameryn Hebenton, who had two hits and a solo home run in the first. UC Davis improved to 21-23 with a 6-9 mark in Big West play, while UC Riverside dropped to 11-29 and 4-11 in conference competition.

The Highlanders reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, using Hebenton's two-out solo home run for an early 1-0 lead.

After coming up empty in the first two innings the Aggies had four hits, including two doubles and a triple in the third en route to three runs. Wagoner started the inning with a lead-off triple, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles for Megan Guzman and Elizabeth Santana. Jessica Gonzalez helped bring in the third run of the inning with an RBI single to left field, giving UC Davis a 3-1 lead that they would not surrender.

UC Riverside started another two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth, with Jessica Vasser sending a single to right field. Brooke Hebenton followed with an RBI triple to right filed to cut the deficit to one.

Holmes took over from there, preventing the Highlanders from scoring the tying run in the final three innings. UC Riverside had two singles to start the sixth but Holmes retired the next three batters in order, using two strikeouts to get out of the inning. The seventh was a one, two, three inning for Holmes, helping the Aggies seal the 3-2 win.

Holmes improved to 15-16 with the victory, after allowing seven hits and striking out seven in the complete game. Jordyn McDonald took the loss and dropped to 7-13 after allowing nine hits and three earned runs in seven innings.

UC Davis will play its final home series of the season next weekend against Cal Poly, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7 at 12 p.m.
