Heylman Leads Aggies to 8-1 Win over Dirtbags

April 8, 2011

Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Shortstop Scott Heylman went 3-for-5, nearly hitting for the cycle, and drove in six runs to lead the UC Davis baseball team to an 8-1 Big West Conference victory over Long Beach State Friday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

UC Davis moves to 6-18 on the year and 1-3 in conference play while Long Beach State drops to 15-13 and 2-2 in the Big West.

Long Beach State scored their only run of the game in the first inning after Brennan Metzger led off with a base hit, stole second, then moved to third on a throwing error by Aggie catcher Alex Dreyfuss. Metzger would score on an RBI ground out by Ino Patron.

Aggie starting pitcher Scott Lyman settled in after the first inning and gave up only three additional hits to the Dirtbags in his eight innings of work. He earned his first win of the year and struck out three while walking only two batters.

Heylman's double in the third inning scored both Seth Batty and Justin Andrade to give UC Davis a 2-1 lead which the Aggies never relinquished.

In the fourth inning, UC Davis put up five runs on only two hits to take a 7-1 lead. With the bases loaded and only one out, Dreyfuss scored the first run of the inning off a passed ball while Cepin took advantage of a wild pitch from Long Beach State's Andrew Gagnon to score in the next at bat.

Gagnon was replaced by freshman Kyle Friedrichs who walked Brett Morgan then gave up a bases-clearing triple to Heylman which brought home Morgan, Andrade and Seth Batty.

UC Davis added an extra run in the sixth, capitalizing on the Dirtbags' pitching struggles. Andrade was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then advanced to second after Friedrichs attempted to pick him off at first but threw the ball away. After a base hit from Brett Morgan, Heylman hit a single into left field, scoring Andrade for his sixth RBI of the game.

Heylman nearly tied a UC Davis single-game record for most RBIs in a game with his six. The record currently stands at seven, achieved on four different occasions.

The senior shortstop was a home run away from hitting for the cycle after a double in the third, a triple in the fourth and a base hit in the sixth. He was also the only batter to record multiple-base hits.

UC Davis and Long Beach State continue the series Saturday at Blair Field. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. Anthony Kupbens will start on the mound for the Aggies against the Dirtbags' Branden Pinder.
