SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose State rallied from a four-run deficit to score five unanswered runs and steal a 5-4 win against the UC Davis softball team Wednesday at the San Jose State Softball Complex.
The Aggies dominated the first four innings, taking a 4-0 lead while the Spartans were held hit-less in that time. San Jose State responded with five runs in the final three innings, using a walk-off RBI double from Jessica Garcia to earn the victory. The Spartans improved to 15-23 with the win while UC Davis dropped to 17-14 on the season.
The Aggie offense combined for nine hits on the day, led by JJ Wagoner who had three hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Rachel Miller and Megan Guzman also had multi-hit games, with each player going 2 for 2 on the day. BranDee Garcia led the way for San Jose State, registering two hits, two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
UC Davis had the offense going early, posting two runs in the top of the first on two hits. The bases were loaded before any outs were recorded after a hit by pitch and two singles. Miller helped score the first run after a sacrifice fly to right field. Jessica Gonzalez was credited with an RBI after a ground-out, as the Aggies went up by two runs.
UC Davis continued to keep the pressure on in the third, starting with a Wagoner lead-off bunt single. Miller singled to center field with one out, putting runners at first and third before Gonzalez had another RBI with a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0.
The Aggies added a run in the top of the fourth, using a two-out rally to take a four run advantage. Chandler Wagner put herself in scoring position with a two-out double down the left field line. Wagner would later score after hits from Guzman and Wagoner.
Jessica Thweatt started in the circle for UC Davis and held San Jose State hit-less in the first four innings. The Spartans managed to get on the board in the fifth, breaking free for three runs on four hits. Breanna Lopez had a clutch two-out two-RBI hit to cap off the inning.
The Spartans scored the tying run in the bottom of the sixth, generating a run after a Cheryl Freitas single and stolen base. Freitas would later score on a fielder's choice to even the score at four apiece.
After UC Davis came up empty in the top of the seventh, San Jose State threatened to start the bottom of the inning. BranDee Garcia started with a lead-off single and later advanced to second on a fielding error. The Aggies were nearly out of the inning after two pop ups, but Jessica Garcia's game winning double gave San Jose State the 5-4 win.
Kasie Cochran took the loss for UC Davis after throwing 1.2 innings of relief and allowing three hits and one earned run. Janessa Gutierrez took the win and improved to 4-2 after allowing four hits and no earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
UC Davis will be back in action this weekend, playing Pacific in a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 12 p.m. All three games this weekend will be broadcast live on ucdavisaggies.com
