INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team was defeated by Pacific, 4-0, Friday morning in the first round of the Big West Conference Championship at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The Tigers advanced to the semifinals, where they will face the No. 2 seed Cal Poly tomorrow at 9 a.m. The Aggies closed out the season with a 5-13 overall record while Pacific improved to 12-10.
"Pacific is a really good team. They were tough and I give them credit for that," said head coach Daryl Lee. "I think they have a good chance to win the tournament."
The Tigers started by winning the doubles point, taking matches at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The pairing of Artem Gramma and Tomasz Krzyszkowski gave Pacific the first win of the day with an 8-0 defeat of George Horowitz and Jack Horowitz. Fernando Ristow and Angus Thomsan followed with an 8-3 win over Toki Sherbakov and Alec Haley at the No. 2 position to seal the doubles point.
In singles play, Pacific won three matches in straight sets, taking wins in the No. 3-5 positions. Ivan Castro was perfect on the day with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Kyle Miller at the No. 4 position. Alex Golding posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Chris Aria in the No. 5 position before Ristow had the deciding match with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Coates at No. 3 singles. The matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 did not finish.
