DAVIS, Calif. - Scott Lyman and Justin Andrade each recorded two hits, but San Jose State put up five runs in the first inning and never gave up the lead, claiming a 13-1 win over the UC Davis baseball team on Tuesday at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.
UC Davis is now 9-25 overall while San Jose State improves to 27-15.
With two outs in the first inning, two costly UC Davis errors allowed three runs to score before a two-run home run from Kerry Jenkins gave San Jose State an early 5-0 lead.
After walking Michael DiRocco to start the second inning, Aggie starter Harry Stanwyck retired nine straight and struck out the side in the fourth inning.
The Spartans would remain hitless in the fifth before Jenkins' triple to right field in the sixth brought in another run. Jenkins would also score in the sixth inning off an RBI single from Nick Borg to put San Jose State up 7-0.
San Jose State added another run in the seventh as Jacob Valdez hit a solo home run to right field, then scored five more in the ninth inning to seal the 13-1 win.
UC Davis' lone run came in the eighth after pinch hitter Drew Lassen hit a single to right field to score Adam Young. Young led off the inning with a pinch hit single of his own, moved to second after David Popkins was walked, then advanced to third as Scott Lyman hit into a double play.
The Aggies had several chances to score throughout the game, starting with the second inning when Lyman and Eric Johnson reached base in consecutive at bats. Johnson advanced all the way to third on a single from Daniel Cepin and a grounder to first from Kevin Grove, but was left after Spencer Brann struck out.
With two outs in the ninth inning, Andrade doubled to left center field, then Seth Batty and Young both walked to load the bases, but Popkins grounded out to short to end the game.
Stanwyck was given the loss to move to 1-2 overall while Andy Hennessey earned the win after giving up only six hits and striking out five in seven innings of work.
In addition to Andrade and Lyman's two hits, five other Aggie batters hit safely, including Brett Morgan who extended his team-leading hitting streak to 12 games.
UC Davis continues a five-game homestand by hosting Cal State Northridge for a three-game series beginning Friday.
