UC Davis Claims 2010-11 Causeway Cup

April 15, 2011

DAVIS, Calif. - Buoyed by 12 individual wins, including three in the highest-scoring sports, UC Davis captured a 56.25-43.75 victory over Sacramento State in the 2010-11 Causeway Cup multi-sport competition. This is the seventh year the two regional rivals have squared off and the fourth time the Aggies have claimed the title.

Founded in 2004-05, the Causeway Cup pits the two athletics departments' common sport programs. The matchups in women's volleyball, football, men's basketball and women's basketball are worth 10 points apiece. All other sports compete for five points each. If teams in any given sport face off several times in an academic year, the points are divided by the number of meetings.

UC Davis enjoyed a 30-point swing in the late fall when its football and two basketball teams scored wins in succession, boosting its lead to 47.50-15.0. The Aggies also took series sweeps in women's golf and softball, supplementing the 15 points gained from women's soccer and the two cross country teams to start the season.

The rival institutions sponsor the following common sports: men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, football, women's volleyball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's basketball, women's gymnastics, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track & field, baseball and softball.

The Causeway Cup takes its name from the Causeway Classic, the nickname former Hornet sports information director Mike Duncan gave to the annual UC Davis-Sacramento State football game in the 1980s. In turn, Duncan's moniker was a play on the Yolo Causeway, the stretch of Interstate 80 that bridges the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area between the two cities.

The Aggies won the inaugural contest in 2004-05, reclaimed the title in 2007-08 and again in 2009-10.
