STANFORD, Calif. - Daniel Cepin hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to bring the UC Davis baseball team within one run of 12th-ranked Stanford, but the Cardinal held on to edge the Aggies 3-2 Monday at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond in Stanford.
The Aggies move to 3-13 overall while Stanford improves to 7-5 on the year.
In the first game for UC Davis since Mar. 13, the Aggies fell behind 3-0 after giving up a run in the first inning and a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.
With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Cepin singled to center field to bring home Scott Heylman and Scott Kalush and cut Stanford's lead to one run.
In the sixth, David Popkins singled, then moved to second on a two-out base hit from Eric Johnson, but Kalush struck out to end the inning. Brett Morgan walked to lead off the eighth inning, then moved to second on a balk, but was left on base after Popkins and Lyman picked up the final two outs of the frame.
With two outs in the ninth, Heylman doubled down the right field line, but pinch hitter Seth Batty struck out as Stanford claimed the narrow 3-2 victory.
Scott Lyman started on the mound for UC Davis, giving up one run on two hits, including. Anthony Kupbens and Dayne Quist each pitched two innings of relief while Tom Briner finished the game for UC Davis, holding the Cardinal hitless in the seventh and eighth innings and striking out three batters.
UC Davis faces San Jose State in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.
