SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The UC Davis baseball team dropped a doubleheader against the University of San Francisco on Sunday, falling by scores of 6-2 and 8-4 at Benedetti Diamond in San Francisco.
UC Davis drops to 2-5 on the season while San Francisco improves to 2-5.
The Dons scored twice in the second inning to take an early lead in game one, but the Aggies cut their lead in half with a run from Brett Morgan in the top of the third.
San Francisco took a 4-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh but UC Davis picked up another run when a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Justin Andrade allowed Eric Johnson to score. Johnson led off the inning with a base hit then stole second before advancing to third on a ground out by Adam Young.
USF, however, would seal the 6-2 win with two runs in the eighth.
David Popkins hit 3-for-4 while Eric Johnson was 2-for-4.
Anthony Kupbens went five full innings on the mound for UC Davis, giving up three earned runs on six hits, but struck out five.
UC Davis jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the second game after scoring twice in the first inning, then again in the third. The Aggies opened with another run from Morgan who was hit by a pitch then stole second base. Morgan moved to third on a ground out from Daniel Cepin then scored off a double by David Popkins. Popkins would eventually come around to score on an RBI single from Paul Politi.
The Aggies struck again in the third after Morgan led off with a double to left field, then came home on a sacrifice fly by Politi.
San Francisco moved to within one run after scoring twice in the fourth inning, but UC Davis extended their lead in the sixth inning to go up 4-2. Scott Lyman led off with a double, then scored on an RBI single from Scott Kalush.
The Dons rallied in the seventh inning, scoring four runs on seven hits to take a 6-4 lead. After Nik Balog grounded out to second base, Travis Higgs doubled to center field, then moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by Ted LeMasters. LeMasters tried moving to second but was thrown out for the second out of the inning, however Jason Mahood and Pete Lavin followed with back-to-back singles.
Aggie pitcher Joe Biagini entered the game, replacing Nathan Slater, but walked Connor Bernatz to load the bases, then gave up a single to Adam Clear, allowing Lavin and Mahood to score. A single by Stephen Yarrow brought home Bernatz for the fourth run of the inning.
USF scored two more in the eighth inning to complete the rally and take the 8-4 win.
Lyman and Politi each hit 2-for-3 and Lyman went 4.2 innings as the Aggies' starting pitcher, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and striking out five batters.
UC Davis returns to action Tuesday in a 2 p.m. matchup at Sacramento State before hosting Fresno State in a three-game series beginning Friday.
