UC Davis Splits in Day Two at Paradise Classic

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The UC Davis softball team split in day two at the Oceanic Time Warner Paradise Classic on Friday, taking a 4-2 win over Southern Utah before a 9-1 loss to the host school No. 8 Hawai'i.

Elizabeth Santana lifted UC Davis (1-2) over Southern Utah (0-3) in game one with a two-run home run. The Aggies trailed the Thunderbirds 2-1 heading into the fifth inning, where Santana delivered the go ahead runs. In game two, Hawaii (3-0) used a five-run third inning to take control, en route to the final 9-1 score.

Santana led UC Davis with three hits on the day, to go along with three RBI and a run scored. Alex Holmes had two hits in game one, while Chandler Wagner and Megan Guzman registered a hit in each game.

In game one, Southern Utah managed to reach the scoreboard first, using three hits in the bottom of the second to take an early 1-0 advantage. After back-to-back singles Nicole Huntsman sent out a RBI single. UC Davis prevented further damage however, by catching Heather Richardson in a rundown that provided the third out.

The Aggies answered in the following inning, posting a run of their own to even the score at 1-1 in the top of the third. Guzman took advantage of a Thunderbird error, using a RBI single to score an unearned run. Southern Utah added another run in the bottom of the inning, going up 2-1 thanks to a RBI single from Darleen Fernandez.

After a blank inning in the fourth UC Davis took control in the top of the fifth, sending out a two-run home run for a 3-2 lead. JJ Wagoner started the inning with a single up the middle but the Aggies were in danger of stranding another runner after two outs. Santana answered by sending out the first long ball of the season for UC Davis.

Santana added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a RBI single through the right side, giving the Aggies a 4-2 advantage.

Jessica Thweatt picked up the win in the circle, throwing a complete game and allowing six hits and two earned runs, while striking out five. Daniell Axe received the loss after two earned runs and three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

In game two, Hawai'i made the most of its scoring opportunities with nine runs on nine hits in the game. UC Davis tallied five hits in the game but stranded seven on base, including three in the third.

After one run in the first the Rainbow Wahine opened the game up with five runs and six hits in the third. Sharla Klibenstein and Kaile Nakao each had RBI doubles in the inning, helping Hawai'i to a 6-0 lead.

The Aggies got on the board in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Rainbow Wahine to score the run. Hawai'i ended the game early in the sixth however, taking advantage of two UC Davis errors to score three unearned runs for the final 9-1 score.

Kala Parnaby picked up the win for the Rainbow Wahine, allowing five hits and no earned runs, while striking out seven. Holmes took the loss and dropped to 0-2 on the season, after allowing four earned runs and seven hits in 2.2 innings.

UC Davis earned the No. 3 seed heading into bracket play tomorrow and will have a rematch with Texas Southern at 12 p.m. The Aggies are guaranteed two games and will either play in a consolation game at 4 p.m. or the championship game at 6 p.m.
