SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Matt Wiesenfarth put away his second straight gamewinning goal to give the UC Davis men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly on Wednesday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo.
UC Davis won its second straight game to move to 4-5-2 and 2-1 in the Big West. The win was also UC Davis' first in San Luis Obispo since Sept. 17, 2006.
Cal Poly drops to 4-4-2 and 1-1 in league action.
In front of Cal Poly's largest home crowd of the year, Wiesenfarth saw one shot attempt hit the crossbar and ricochet back into play. Freshman Brian Ford was on hand to collect the ball and send a diagonal pass through the box from the right side of the field. Wiesenfarth ran up on the pass, sending his shot into the back of the net with only six minutes remaining in regulation.
Wiesenfarth had the Aggies' only shot of the first half, which came in the 43rd minute and resulted in a save from Mustang goalkeeper Patrick McLain.
UC Davis turned on its offensive intensity in the second half with 10 shots, starting with Kevin Schulte's attempt in the 60th minute.
At the 60:01 mark, Schulte's shot was cleared off the line by a Cal Poly defender and Alex Henry's follow up only 13 seconds later was likewise deflected away by the Mustang backline. Schulte collected the ball, but his shot at 60:35 went wide left.
Omar Zeenni registered his second straight shutout in the net and made two saves.
The Aggies return to action on Saturday when they host UC Santa Barbara at 3 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field.
