DAVIS, Calif. - Lance Patterson's goal in the 92nd minute lifted UC Davis to a 1-0 nonconference victory over San Jose State Sunday at Aggie Soccer Field in Davis, Calif.
UC Davis improves to 1-1 on the year while San Jose State drops to 2-1 overall.
"It was a tough game," said Patterson. "We came off a tough game at Bakersfield and we knew we had to come back five times harder and that's what we did. We just battled until we got the goal."
UC Davis maintained a strong offensive possession throughout the game, tallying 20 shots while only allowing seven from San Jose State. In the first half, the Aggies recorded eight attempts while the Spartans could only get a shot off one time.
The Aggies began the second half with several hard shots, but the Spartan defense stayed strong, blocking attempts from Rene Cuellar, Nick Grigoriev and Jason Santos. In the 64th minute, Michael Garrick saw his shot saved by Lester while a header from Dan Reese in the 68th minute barely lifted over the crossbar.
The San Jose State offense began to come alive midway through the second half. In the 65th minute, Ricky Dorrego stood wide open in the middle of the penalty area, but his header was easily saved by UC Davis goalkeeper Tommy Siragusa. A shot from Omri Brinner less than a minute later ricocheted off the foot of a UC Davis defender, finding Josh Boemecke. Boemecke fired a shot inside the near post, but Siragusa dove to knock it out of bounds.
Play continued on the other end as Garrick nearly scored in the 71st minute. After finding Lester out of position, he sent a low shot toward the near post, but a San Jose State defender was able to sprint back and clear the ball out of bounds before it crossed the goal line. Regulation would end with both teams remaining scoreless.
Two minutes into the first overtime period, John Joslin slotted a pass in between two defenders to Patterson, who was making a run down the left sideline. Patterson surged ahead of a San Jose State defender, then beat Spartan keeper Jonathan Lester with a shot to the far side of the net to win the game for UC Davis.
The goal was Patterson's only shot attempt of the game.
Joslin, Garrick and Reese each recorded three shots while Santos and Alex Aguiar fired two attempts. In total, 12 different Aggies attempted shots.
For San Jose State, Boemecke led the Spartan offense with three shots while Brinner had two attempts.
Siragusa, who replaced an injured Ryan McCowan three minutes into the game, recorded two saves and held the shutout. Lester tallied three saves.
